Ruth’s Refuge is the only organization devoted to providing furniture and home essentials to refugees and asylum seekers rebuilding their lives in New York City.
Refugees and asylum seekers arrive in New York City with rich and varied life experiences but few tangible assets. Many recently settled families are unable to furnish their homes, often sleeping on the floor as they work to pay off debts, find jobs and otherwise struggle to make their way in an unfamiliar city.
Their goal at Ruth’s Refuge is to welcome these families by providing them with apartment furnishings and other home essentials in partnership with local resettlement agencies. Their volunteers donate furniture, buy new appliances and linens, load moving trucks, assemble furniture and bring love and welcome into the homes of newcomers.
How JP Urban Can Help: Donation During Your Move
As part of our commitment to the community, we offer an easy solution for those looking to donate their furniture and household items during their move. Here’s how it works:
Let us know:
When you book your move with JP Urban Moving, simply inform us if you have items to donate. We will arrange to pick them up during your move.
We’ll handle the rest:
We’ll transport your furniture to their storage space in Brooklyn.
Prepare in advance:
To help us serve you better, please let us know how many items you plan to donate and send their photos, so we can prepare accordingly. This way we can assess condition and suitability for their clients. Dimensions are also very helpful.
What can be donated?
Ruth’s Refuge is currently accepting:
- Furniture:
Table and Chair Sets; Couches (small); Dressers; TV Stands; Desks; Coffee Tables, Side Table, etc.
- Household Items:
Lamps; TVs; Microwaves; Rugs; Air conditioners; Rice cookers (8 cup or larger); Complete Dishes Sets.
Dishware, glassware & flatware must be par of a complete set (minimum service for 4).
Ruth’s Refuge cannot accept:
Used bed frames, mattresses, or linens.
Clothing.
Oversized furniture (Large Bookcases & Cabinets).
All upholstered items must be from a pet and smoke free home.
