MIDWOOD HISTORY 

The name ‘Midwood’ comes from the dutch settlers that arrived in 1652, noting how wooded the area was at the time. The area was undeveloped until the 20th century when immigrants from from the Soviet Union, Jamaica, Haiti, Guyana, Mexico and Ireland arrived. Midwood is a multi-ethnic neighborhood boasting with dozens of different languages. Today, Midwood, remains a largely Orthodox Jewish neighborhood. But, is it safe to move to Midwood, Brooklyn? Midwood has some of the best public schools in Brooklyn, including Midwood High School, James Madison High School and Edward R. Murrow High School.

Midwood High School is one of the best public schools in Brooklyn, offering over 22 AP classes and boasting high SAT scores. Moreover, Midwood High School sends students to some of the top colleges throughout the country and has a partnership with Brooklyn College, which is right next door.

Edward R. Murrow High School has exceptional programs in theatre, music and chess. In 2008, Mel Brooks was so impressed by the their theatre program, he granted them the first performing rights for The Producers. Alumni include Darren Aronofsky, Lil Mama, Joey Badass, among others

James Madison High School is also one of the best high schools in the area. James Madison offers various programs including a Law Institute, Bio-Medical Institute and Academy of Finance. Madison has far wider class offerings than traditional high schools. It’s no surprise that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Senator Chuck Schumer went to James Madison.
