Follow our simple rules because they exist for your safety. If you neglect them, you also neglect the safety of other tenants and the entire facility. Read our guidebook and you’ll prevent damage to your storage unit.
Items you can’t keep in your storage unit
You can’t keep perishables in our storage facility
Many people overlook or don’t put much importance into storing perishables. However, foods and plants are one of those things you can’t keep in your storage unit. Avoid putting anything that has an expiration date, even pet food in a storage unit. Just think what will happen to your storage and all its other contents when insects and rodents get a sniff of that food. They will most certainly find their way into your unit and start munching on the food.

Pests could easily damage all other items in the unit by chewing on them and even nesting there. You’d also be risking the possibility for infestation for the entire facility. The health risks are not something any reputable moving and storage company would allow. Especially if you don’t have a climate-controlled unit to prevent moisture and heat.
Animals you can’t keep in your storage unit
You can’t leave any animals in your unit! Even though this rule may seem obvious to some people, storing living, or dead animals are forbidden. Using any kind of storage unit, even the most luxurious or equipped ones to house a pet is cruel and will be condemned. When we say ‘condemned’, we mean it is illegal and we’ll apply proper measurements. If you are going on a vacation and cannot take your pet with you, you’ll have to make other arrangements. You should be hiring a sitter or leaving them in a pet hostel. Dead animals are a no-brainer and it should go without saying that you can’t keep them in your storage unit. Same as with perishables, they attract insects, vermin, mold, and disease.
Property that is not your own
If you don’t legally own something, no matter if you just wanted to do your friend a favor, you cannot store it in your unit. It may seem like a silly thing you can’t keep in a storage unit, but these rules are also here for your protection. If you have anything in your storage that isn’t yours, your Movers Ridgewood Queens NY will help you find another solution. And if somebody reports you holding a stolen item, you will get into serious trouble with the law.

Hazardous materials
What we designate as a hazardous material is anything that can create potential danger in case of spilling.
The rule applies to:
- corrosive materials,
- chemicals,
- odorous/noxious gases,
- any toxic materials or
- flammable containers,
- gasoline,
- compressed gas,
- full propane tanks,
- kerosene,
- lamp and motor oils,
- fertilizers,
- paints,
- cleaners.
- And also asbestos and anything that contains asbestos.
All of these compounds have the dangerous potential of catching fire, exploding or causing a serious health problem. However, you can store your extra lawnmower in your unit, but you must first drain or empty gas and oil tanks.
Scented items or wet items in your storage unit are a bad idea as well
Although these items are not illegal, still, scented items can easily attract pests, just like food will. Wet items help mildew, mold, and bacteria to grow and could cause damage to your property. So double-check everything and ensure your unit is dry and without mold before locking it up.
Things you can’t keep in your storage unit: illegal substances
Drugs and drug-related paraphernalia should go without saying but we have to list it. Forbidden substances are strictly prohibited in your store because they are illegal.
Explosives/Ammunition/Firearms
You cannot put fireworks, ammunition, munitions and firearms, bombs and fireworks in your unit. If you are going away and don’t feel safe leaving such items in your empty house, enlist your local shooting range. They have the license and equipment to store items like firearms and ammunition, and many of those businesses offer storage options for these situations.
Unregistered vehicles
You have to have a current registration for your vehicles, whether you own a car, truck, boat, RV, trailer or motorcycle. And the registration has to be in your name. You cannot keep another person’s vehicle at our facility. It doesn’t matter if that person is a close friend or a family member.
People
This one is pretty self-explanatory, but if you have a big dilemma about it, here it is. You cannot live in your storage unit, no matter what the circumstances. You will also not be able to work from your unit. It is illegal, so if our security discovers that you’re is using a storage unit to sleep in or work from we’ll have to call the police to handle the situation.
